PROPHYLAXIS FOR CHRONIC DIARRHEA
Primary importance

  • Drink boiled and filtered water
  • Clean raw fruits and vegetables adequately before consumption
  • Proper hand washing
Cryptosporidium:
  • No prophylaxis
Microsporidia:
  • No chemoprophylaxis is known to prevent microsporidiosis.
Isospora Belli & Cyclospora :
  • TMP/SMX used as prophylaxis for PCP also protects against Isospora and cyclospora.
  • Secondary prophylaxis with TMP/SMX [150 mg/m2/day of TMP] is recommended to prevent relapse.
Drugs & Dosage for of TMP-SMX

Drugs Dosage
TMP/SMX

- 150 mg of TMP m2/day PO BD on alternate day
- 5 mg/kg of TMP/day PO HS daily
